    Assalaam u alaykum.

my question is that when it comes to doing changes to our bodies how can a person distinguish that which change of the body comes under halal category and which change comes under the category of changing the creation of Allah and under Haram category to do.

for example in terms of removing hair, removing hair of head is not a problem and allowed (even without the days of Umrah and Hajj). but about same removing of hair normally of the forehead/eyebrow region we find a Hadith that kinda indicates that this is altering creation of Allah.

in terms of tattooing, scholars say it is Haram because one has to pierce through the skin and drop ink under the skin. so this damage and permanent ink in the skin is changing Allah’s creation. but at the same time scholars allow nose and ear piercings for women.

so the list of changes a person causes his body is very big. so how to judge whether a change is allowable or not? i mean if we look into that any permanent change (like in plastic surgeries) is the red line, then what about the hadith that prohibit removal of forehead hair, even though it was plucking, which is not permanent change. but at the same time piecing is more permanent.

similarly if the red line is cutting through human body then, piecing we see is allowed and taking a look at circumcision.

so what is the criteria to judge what falls beyond the red line? among changes like of muscle building (by body building, where when a muscle is strained by us during an exercise, there is micro-tearing of muscle fiber. so when the body repairs the muscle fibers, new and bigger fibers are made), and also changes of losing fat by dieting. tanning the skin with sunlight, person eating deliberately fruits to get a nice skin glow.

so with all these changes what is the criteria of judging what is allowable and what is not?

The change in the creation of Allah in Quran means to do shirk . It is to change the true nature of human being which tends to believe and worship only one God.

It is the same 5 categories mentioned in 7:33 which is the criteria to judge something is Haram or not.

The prohibition in some Hadith is in the perspective that such things were being practiced by prostitutes and indecent women. The way sometime we forbid our children from adopting a fashion which is in vogue with people of bad reputation even if the fashion is not itself vulgar.

@Irfan76 but sir many teachers and scholars extent the verse to physical alterations as well. so where would lie the line to determine which change is allowed and which is not? would body building, tanning, removing hair from legs or chest, be considered within the line or outside the line? and if it’s about what we normally perceive as distorting in an unnatural way then wouldn’t human understanding be shaped to an extent by what he’s exposed. i mean in a society where something unnatural is done but because they have been doing it for centuries, they don’t find it unnatural etc

Those who associate it with alteration in the body, they have to answer it.

We adopt a principle stance in the light of Quran which tells on what bases a thing is called haram. so the objection comes up when there is something unethical element is involved.

Any alteration in body for the purpose of beautification is fine, rather desirable. any alteration which involves indecency is prohibited.

Change in the nature of God belongs to the things like a man adopting feminine ways or vice versa, committing shirk, making something haram that which is halal and vice versa.

@Irfan76 but sir as you explained that ayah talks about alterations of human nature which is Shirk but also the thing of physical changing to make oneself look and be like a woman despite being a man, then why can this thing not be extended to physical alterations within the body as well? like tattooing or bodybuilding etc?

if such a change amounts to femininity for a man or masculinity for a woman or amputating the body parts, or anything like that it will be prohibited, otherwise not. If every change or alteration in the body is prohibited one should not allow to dye or shave one’s hair or trim one’s nails or use Henna to make temporary tattoos.
