    Asalamualaikum,

If one were to purchase a product knowing that it was manufactured in a country with questionable record against Muslims, would this be considered sinful or immoral? For example, if one purchases a hair product that is being sold locally, but was manufactured in Israel or China. Is it better to avoid doing so, can one keep such options open when considering cost, quality, etc.

    JazakAllah

In exceptional cases where it becomes clear beyond reasonable doubt that cashflows generated from purchasing a particular product will go staright to a particular country and that country will on purpose commit violence on Muslims or any other group of Humans which will be supoorted by that cashflow, then such a purchase can fall under blatant co-operation with evil (taawun ala al-ithm) and should be avoided by Muslims.

In most cases however, they are mere conspiracy theories and based on speculation without clear evidence to support that conspiracy. Corporate entities, most of the time, operate independently as a separate entity with internal management decisions being made considering well-being of the entity. Therefore, chances that a corporate entity would engage in any such conspiracy are very low if not impossible.

At the end, it is an individual’s decision to ultimately decide on these matters as per his/her information. Just the way an individual makes decisons regarding cost, quality etc. of a product, similarly he/she can incorporate other factors like a foreign conspiracy or foreign oppression into his decision making. We cannot stop them from doing so, however we can advise them to not follow mere speculations as per guidelines of Islam.

JazakAllah for the detailed answer. I have a couple follow-up questions if you don’t mind.

1.) Let’s say I know that the origination of a product is in a country that commits oppression against other people. Am I now responsible for ensuring that the company producing the product does not directly financially support the country’s government? Or this is not necessary since, as you said, companies typically function as a separate entity?

2.) Most probably, the company has to pay taxes to the government. In this way, am I supporting the country’s government/economy financially? Or is this too indirect of a comparison, given that money travels beyond borders anyhow?
3.) And just to clarify, by conspiracy you mean a corporation directly supporting their government through financial means for the purpose of harming others?

      JazakAllah

      1) You should follow the norms of the industry. In order to form a strong opposing view which goes against the norms, we must have some credible evidence before forming such an opinion. In the absence of such evidence, the norms of the industry/corpoarte world should be followed.

      2) Payment of tax is not a donation to support an oppressive government’s cause but a compulsion to survive in an economy, therefore equating tax with targeted funding would be inappropriate.

      3) Yes.

The bottomline is that in order to blame a whole organization in supporting such heinous acts, we must have enough evidence to support our conclusion, not emotional decisons based on pseudo-facts or false information or mere speculations.

Islam wants a Muslim to be a responsible Muslim in every sphere of life and their decisions should be based on facts, not on speculations.
