Reference For Zaid Bin Thabit'S Presence During The Final Recitation Of Quran
Posted by Aayan Zubairi on April 13, 2023 at 7:39 amSalam,
I heard Ghamidi sahab mentioning how Syedna Zaid ibn Thabit was a witness to The Prophet’s final recension of The Quran with Gabriel which came to be known as the Al Ardah al Akhirah and was written down by Zaid during this recension.
Could someone please provide me with a reference for this? I believe it was somewhere in Musnad Ahmad.

From Al-A’mash, from Abu Thabyan, from Ibn Abbas [and in an additional narration by Al-Zaidiyyah and Al-Taymiyyah: Ibn Abbas said to us, and Shurayh followed them], he said: “Which of the two recitations do you consider first?” We said: “Abdullah’s recitation.” Jareer added: “Our recitation is the first recitation, and Abdullah’s recitation is the last recitation.” He then said: “The Messenger of Allah -peace be upon him- used to review the Quran with him once every Ramadan, except in the year he passed away, in which it was reviewed with him twice. Abdullah ibn Mas’ood attended it and witnessed what was abrogated and what was altered.”
This narration was reported by Sa’id bin Mansur in his Sunan (58), Ibn Sa’d in his Tabaqat (2/342), Ibn Abi Shaybah (6/301/28854), Ahmad (1/362/3422), Al-Bukhari in Khalq Af’ al-Ibad (382), Al-Nasa’i in Al-Kubra (7/247/7940) and (7/353/8201), Abu Ya’la (4/435/2562), Al-Dulabi in Al-Kunna (1/301/527), Al-Tahawi in Sharh al-Ma’ani (1/356), and in Sharh al-Mushkil (1/264/286), (8/138/3120), (3/1131/2439), and (14/229/5590), Ibn al-A’rabi in Al-Mu’jam (3/1131/2439), Ja’far al-Mustaghfiri in Fada’il al-Quran (436), Ibn Hazm in Al-Ihkam (6/113), Ibn ‘Asakir in Tarikh Dimashq (33/140), and Al-Dayya’ in Al-Mukhtara (9/542/533) and (9/543/534). [Al-Tuhfah (4/279/5854), Al-Ittihaf (7/44/7295) and (7/47/7303), and Al-Musnad Al-Musannaf (13/236/6365)].
And it was narrated by Israel ibn Yunus [trustworthy]; from Ibrahim ibn Muhajir [Al-Bajali: there is no harm in him, his biography was mentioned recently in the hadith of Hudhayfah in Al-Shawahid]; from Mujahid, from Ibn Abbas that he said to his companions: “Which of the two recitations do you see as the last?” They said, “The recitation of Zaid.” He said, “Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to present the Quran to Jibril every year, and when the year in which he passed away came, he presented it to him twice. Ibn Mas’ud witnessed it, so the recitation of Abdullah (Ibn Mas’ud) was the last.”
It was reported by Ahmad (1/275 and 325), Al-Bazzar (11/181/4923), Al-Tahawi in his explanation of Al-Mushkil (1/264/287) and (8/139/3122), and Al-Hakim (2/230).
The readings of Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, Zaid bin Thabit, the Muhajireen, and the Ansar were all the same. They all used the common reading, which was the one that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) recited to Jibreel twice a year. Zaid witnessed the final presentation and he used to teach people this reading until he died.
Al Baghawi in Sharh ul Sunnah (4/525) and Al Suyuti in Al Itqan (1/177).
