Making new slaves was forbidden but the slaves who were already there were traded and kept. In addition, those war prisoners whose fate had yet not been decided were distributed to Muslims and they provided them food and shelter and also in exchange they take benefit from their services, as there was no jail system then. In that situation, Hazrat Fatima might have asked for a slave.
