    Salam Alaikum,

It is a very common practice in the country where I live that whenever someone has the relevant experience and feels that they have better economic opportunities elsewhere or also perhaps are being exploited by their employer (if one is if the opinion that they are being compensated less than for the time and effort they are investing), they start searching for better financial opportunities elsewhere.

However when the time comes for them to give the company an interview, I’ve seen everybody giving a false story of how they have a doctor/dentist visit/family emergency for a false cover up story so they can attend the job interview without their current employer finding out.

From a common sense perspective this behavior is completely understandable as if anyone was to tell the truth to their current employer, the latter would start making arrangements immediately to replace the employee who is job searching elsewhere and there is a good chance the the employee would be left unemployed.

However once the interview stage is over and if the offer for the better job has been extended it is fair play from then onwards as the employee gives a agrees to the grace period of 2 weeks before leaving the company.

Given the whole situation, is lying for the alternate job interview cover up story a sin?

In such matters, one should try to make up a true cover-up story without telling the actual story to save oneself from imminent harm. Telling a lie is immoral, but the compulsion to tell a lie mitigates the intensity of an immoral act which is not meant to deceive the other party but save oneself from imminent harm.
