Atheism At The Time Of Prophet Muhammad SWS
Posted by suleman khan on August 6, 2023 at 12:46 amDoes Atheism exist during the time of revelation of Quran? It appears to me that it is silent on this issue!

Moderator August 6, 2023 at 3:05 pmAtheism was not prevalent in the Arabia at the time of Prophet Muhammad SWS. However, the Quran provides very solid rational arguments for the existence of God.

Member August 9, 2023 at 7:42 pmIn a recent Q & A session with Al Mawrid Australia (unfortunately I couldn’t find the clip of that video), in a reply to the similar question Ghamadi sb said that Atheism (ill had) is ever present in this world and its “ratio” always more or less equal to the other beliefs – this contradicts his above statement in your video. Also we see the rise of Atheism in recent times around the world, for instance here in Australia the latest census data shows the exponential rise of Atheism ( 33%).

Moderator August 11, 2023 at 1:13 amThese are two diferent things. In the above video, Ghamidi Sahab is commenting whether Atheism was prevalent in Arabia at the time of Prophet Muhammad (sws) and in the second video below which you referenced above, Ghamidi Sahab is explaining the history of Atheism.
From Quran, it becomes clear that polytheism was the prevalent problem in the religious thought of Mecca and surrounding regions of Arabia. Had Atheism been prevalent the way polytheism was at that time, then Quran would have definitely critiqued that school of thought as well the way it has critiqued different polytheistic notions found in polytheists of Arabia and in people of the book. Quran, for us Muslims, is the most credible source of established history and whatever is mentioned in Quran we take it as an established fact. Quran has vehemently condemned polytheism and has given arguments to counter an atheist mind and to help an agnostic mind in its search for the truth. A significant portion of Quran contains arguments ranging from intuitive, intellectual, historical and empirical domains which are more than enough to answer atheistic viewpoint.

Member August 13, 2023 at 2:28 amThe point I was making is that the rise of Atheism in recent times, Australia is just one example, I am sure it is the similar situation around the modern world today.
In the above video Ghamadi sb saying (time stamp 47.10-48.10) its ratio relative to population is constant and will remain the same in the future. However, that is not correct as per the consistent rise of Atheism.

Moderator August 13, 2023 at 10:22 amWhat we see as a rise in atheism is only in people formally identifying themselves as disbelievers. Atheism is an ancient idea; we not only find significant traces of it in ancient Greece as well as pre-Christian Rome, but according to some historians it was more prominent in those societies than any other civilization ever since.
You can read Battling the Gods: Atheism in the Ancient World by Tim Whitmarsh who wrote on the historical prominence of atheism.
