    قَدْ أَفْلَحَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ

    [How] prosperous are the believers!

    ٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ فِى صَلَاتِهِمْ خَٰشِعُونَ

    Those who pray humbly,

    Al-Mu’minun 23:3

    وَٱلَّذِينَ هُمْ عَنِ ٱللَّغْوِ مُعْرِضُونَ

    who shun idle talk,

Just curious as to what the word “laghaw” means? Does it mean negative talk( like being lewd, offensive, backbiting and talking about things which have no value whatsoever and can be gossip like in toxic family and friend circle) or does it mean fun talk in general (talking about movies, games, food, travel etc which does not have any negative talk examples I mentioned formerly)? Can someone plz clarify along side with the magnitude of sin associated with “Laghaw”?

Thanks! From my understanding it looks like “laghaw” means negative talk only but if negative talk is a part of or creeps into fun talk then even then that is bad.

So just another query:- would the definition of “idle talk” be subjective to cultural/moral standards of one’s ethics?

    2 examples:-

the subject of guns/weapons:- while a pacifist may find talking about guns/weapons to be “idle talk” given his pacifist nature, a sports shooter/martial artist will find the same discussion as beneficial and mentally satisfying/entertaining

Jokes (not lewd/vulgar but may contain perhaps what one might describe as clownish humor):- while a serious natured person may find such jokes to be “idle talk” in the sense that they are useless and a waste of time, a happy go lucky person by nature would find such jokes to be beneficial for his mental health and heart soothing.

    Any thoughts on the above?

This depends on the preference of an individual and one may opt to choose any course of action which suits his personality. Islam only deals with ethical matters in this regard, as soon as something immoral happens, the domain of religion starts.
