Shaan e Nuzul has little or no significance for understanding a Quranic verse. The companions used to cite different incidents under a single verse. This was their way to tell that many a certain verse and its message applied to different situations, as maintained by Shah Wali ullah in his book Al Fauz ul Al Kabeer.

Shaan e Nuzul traditions are sometimes misleading and sometimes unnecessary. The context of the Quran itself is sufficient, however, certain verses themselves demand background like the verse pertaining to the battle of Badr or Bait Rizwan, then the traditions are understood in the description of the verses.
