Is this hadith authentic? What does it mean?

    Yes it is authentic

These are references. Bukhari reported in Adab al Mufrad, Ibn Hameed and al-Bazzaz in their Musnad, al-Bani counted is authentic in his book Sahiha.

The hadith emphasizes the plantation. This is a way to emphasize that one should do one’s job no matter what.

There is one other narration which is a saying of Sahabi (rta) Abdullah bin Salam and is reported in Bukhari’s Adab -al-Mufrad :

Dawud ibn Abi Dawud said, “‘Abdullah ibn Salam said to me, ‘If you hear that the Dajjal has come out while you are planting young palm trees, it is not too late to plant it, for people will still have livelihood after that.

Although categorised weak by Shiekh Albani but it must be kept in mind that Abdullah Bin Salam was a Jewish Convert and there is very much similarity between Islamic tradition of the sapling and the Jewish saying of Yohanan ben Zakkai. Either it was an Islamic tradition that Jews attributed to earlier rabbis, or it was a rabbinical tradition that Abdullah bin Salam (or others) were quoting because of his Jewish origin. The entry of Judeo-Christian sayings into the Islamic tradition (called Israiliyat) is a known phenomenon, and it can happen unknowingly.

There is a detailed study conducted on this topic whose link can be found below:

PLANTING A TREE IN THE END TIMES: AN ANALYSIS OF AN ISLAMIC AND JEWISH SAYING

Since the content of this narration is not objectionable and there was nothing seriously objectionsable on the chain from Anas bin Malik (rta), therefore there was an overall inclination towards acceptance of this narration as saying of Prophet Muhammad (sws).
