  • Are Sufis Muslim?

Posted by Muhammad Sami ud-Din on October 3, 2023 at 6:27 pm

    Asselamu aleyküm,

According to Ustad-e-Mohtaram (ha), Sufism is the parallel religion to Islam. So does that means that, Sufis are not Muslims? Ustad-e-Mohtaram also states that no one has the right to call anyone a non-Muslim. So based on this, Are Sufis Muslims or not?

The Turkish Muslims prominently believes in Sufism, Also Barelvis and almost every Muslim (including, many Deobandis and Shias) in South Asia, too. So kindly clarify this in the light of Qur’an and Sunnah.

    Thanks.

As you already stated, we have no right to call anyone a Non-Muslim who himself claims to be a Muslim.

Ghamidi sahab has explained that he calls tassawuf a parallel system based on the writings of Sufi scholars. For details please watch:

We have no right to accept or reject. We call them whatever they call themselves.

Are they Muslims, according to shariah? For instance, Can one marry into Sufis, being a Muslim?

For marriage, common sense suggests that one should consider compatibility in beliefs. Sharia does not give you or I the right to decide on someone else’s religion. It is each person’s own individual right and the right to accept or reject that person as a Muslim belongs to God. There is nothing for you or I to decide here.

They call themselves as Muslims and we accept that. But, Is marriage permissible with Sufis or Ahmedis? That’s what I am asking about.

The Sharia prohibition in marriage is in reference to shirk (polytheism). The rest is up to one’s own sensitivity and how much importance they give to their own belief system.
