  • Why Grey Areas In Religion (Mushtabihat)?

    assalamualaikum, hello there.

my question is about Gray Areas (Mushtabihat). Why are gray areas left by Allah in his Deen? what is the purpose of gray areas? do they exist only because of insufficient knowledge regarding a matter? or they are deliberately left there by Allah for some reason? what are those reasons? what is their purpose? do they exist as a sort of jackpot win-win button, that if you do then you’re forgiven but if you don’t do out of piety then you get reward. so in both ways a person gets a win?

it is to let people use their intellect. God has done it in the Quran regarding some gray areas and then left the innumerable cases of gray areas to human intellect. God does not want a robot but a man of reason, that is what He emphasized a lot in the Quran.

Grey Areas (Mushtabihat) do not exist independently, rather they arise as a result of application of religious injunctions. Since the applications can be indefinite with more and more of them arising with passing time in different domains of life, therefore it is neither prudent nor possible to enlist every application that human beings have faced or will face in the future. Hence this gives rise to certain applications being falling in this grey area and the matter has been left to the human intellect in the light of the principles provided in the religion.
