My question is that it is often said that arrogance or Istikbar is when a person stands against truth or belittles others. what is the truth here meant by? does it mean the truth about believing in Allah, submitting to him and believing in articles of faith or does it mean that any truth or fact whatsoever? if for example a a group of scientist after research found that a specific compound is found in an egg some of them believe it is after evidence and some of them don’t accept that this compound of amino acid is found there even after knowing it is found there. or if they are asked is it found there or not then they say no it’s not found. (presence of that compound or not is not harmful or beneficial for human use, I’m just saying in terms of general knowledge)

Please see verse 40:35. It gives a good working definition of ‘takabbur’, i.e. a state when someone disputes facts and self-evident truths without proper evidentiary basis. Note also the other adjective used along with mutakabbir in the verse, ie. “jabbar” meaning arrogantly tyrant here (translated as “self-exalting” by Asad). متكبر جبار i.e. arrogant tyrant, a person who does not want to reason and decides things through a forceful and rebellious will and opposition, rather than through merits of argument.

40:35 such as would call God’s messages in question without having any evidence therefor: [a sin] exceedingly loathsome in the sight of God and of those who have attained to faith. It is in this way that God sets a seal on every arrogant, self-exalting heart.”

The simple definition of Takabbur (as given by Prophet Muhammad (sws)) is to stand in opposition to the truth and to consider others inferior. This is an act of transgression (‘Baghi‘), whether done against God or against people. If one denies/rejects the truth intentionally relating to God then it is transgression agaist the God and if it relates to other matters then it is transgression against people. In all scenarios it is a sinful act and one will have to be answerable for such act on the day of judgement. This can have many applied scenarios and each such scenario will be judged separately because it needs to be established first whether or not one was doing it out of arrogance or because of some other excuse which may or may not be acceptable on the day of judgement.
