  • Is It Wrong To Be Overwhelmed With Emotions?

    Salam,

It seems that, at various instances in the Quran, God discourages emotional expression to an extent. For example,

    1) (11:46) God said, “…I urge you to not be among those who are overwhelmed by emotions.”

    2) (36:69) [You call it poetry?] We have not taught poetry to Our messenger and this is also not appropriate for him. This is only a reminder and a clear Qur’ān – In the tafsir of Ghamidi Sahab, he mentions this is said as the people who indulge in poetry tend to be ‘generally people who are prone to emotions and have little to do with sense and reason‘.

    Just to name a few.

Is it wrong to express emotions, and is there a certain level to which one must withhold them? How can one do this when the emotions become beyond one’s capacity to bear?

    Jazakallah.

To be overwhelmed with emotions that lead to wrong decisions and conclusions is what is discouraged, not what people normally moved by an emotion of grief or happiness, etc. For example, love and reverence for one’s forefathers and traditions against Haq are called the same Jahaalat or Jahiliyya or when one divorces one’s wife in anger, etc.
