Quran 34:54 – Meaning Of Alarming Doubt
وَحِیلَ بَیۡنَهُمۡ وَبَیۡنَ مَا یَشۡتَهُونَ كَمَا فُعِلَ بِأَشۡیَاعِهِم مِّن قَبۡلُۚ إِنَّهُمۡ كَانُوا۟ فِی شَكࣲّ مُّرِیبِۭ﴿ ٥٤ ﴾
• Dr. Mustafa Khattab:
They will be sealed off from whatever they desire, as was done to their counterparts before. Indeed, they were ˹all˺ in alarming doubt.
Sabaʾ, Ayah 54

Ghamidi Sahab used the word “perplexing” for murībin
“Because they too remained similarly afflicted with a perplexing doubt.”
murībin can means suspicious or doubtful. So it is an emphasis when combined with doubt (shakkin), meaning, people were overly doubtful of Allah’s revelation and His Messenger. Doubtful to an irrational extent.
