  • Settling Of Ismael AS In Mecca By Ibrahim AS

    Brother,

This question is specifically addressed to Dr. S. Salim. In the video “Critical Study of Hadith Literature” (Part 4) by Dr. S. Salim he mentions that according to Quran when Ibrahim AS settled his son Ibrahim AS in Mecca, Ishaq AS had already born. It is also known that Ishaq AS was born after Ibrahim AS had offered to sacrifice his son Ismael AS on the mount Arafat, which is near Mecca. Does it mean that Ibrahim AS had brought his son Ismael AS all the way from Cannan to Arafat just for sacrifice only without being settled in Mecca? Please clarify my doubt.

    Jazakallah khair,

Yes, the incident of the sacrifice took place first, at Marwa, and then Abraham was ordered, later, to settle his son in Makkah.

My question is not related to the sequence of events, but for the logic and reasoning of traveling such a long distance just for the purpose of sacrifice. If Ibrahim AS was at Cannan when he saw the roya why he had to travel such a long distance to Marwa just for sacrificing his son. He could have done there at Cannan itself? Please explain.

Having acknowledged the fact, that an attempt to sacrifice Ishmael was made at Marwa, we can investigate the reason and the reason was that this place had been declared holy by God and the Marwa was appointed as the altar, so Abraham performed the ritual at the appointed altar.

The details you can read in the book by Abdul Sattar Ghaori, “The Only Son Offered for Sacrifice: Isaac or Ismael”

Islamic traditions cite the sacrificial place as Makkah. Biblical tradition cites it at Mount Moriah (Jerusalem). Pls see Genesis 22:2. The distance between Beersheba to Makkah is approx 1200 km, while to Jerusalem it is 60/70 km.

Quran does not cite the exact place where Prophet Abraham PBUH attempted sacrifice. Please see 37:110-107.

Hence, it is a debatable topic. Both biblical and Islamic sources cannot be counted as conclusive evidence. Given the remoteness of Makkah and long distance from southern Canaan/Beersheba, Mount Moriah seems a more likely places where Abraham offered sacrifice.
