Were offsprings of slave father and slave mother considered slaves in Islam? If so, then slavery would have continued even if Quranic guidance regarding freeing the prisoners of war was followed.
I agree that there probably would have been fewer slaves, but it still would have continued as an institution.

Off springs of slaves were considered slaves in the society. Islam solved this problem by introducing the law of Mukatabat which allowed a slave to buy his freedom from his master and the society was asked to help the slave with their Zakat. A special head of Zakat, Riqab, was appointed for this purpose.
