    Respected Sir/Madam

Is it shirk to request Prophet صَلّى الله عليه وسلّم to make dua for us, (I.e, isteghatha) now that he صَلّى الله عليه وسلّم is not in this world.

Or this is a practice which is not recommended or even sin but not equal to shirk?

Now that Prophet saw is not present among us, we cannot ask him to pray for us.
You ˹alone˺ we worship and You ˹alone˺ we ask for help. [1:5]

“Say (O Muhammad blessings and peace of Allah be upon him): ‘I possess no power of benefit or hurt to myself except as Allah wills. If I had the knowledge of the Ghaib (unseen), I should have secured for myself an abundance of wealth, and no evil should have touched me. I am but a warner, and a bringer of glad tidings unto people who believe”
    [al-A‘raaf 7:188]

Or ˹ask them,˺ “Who responds to the distressed when they cry to Him, relieving ˹their˺ affliction, and ˹Who˺ makes you successors in the earth? Is it another god besides Allah? Yet you are hardly mindful!” [27:62]

Umar ibn al-Khattab reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Do not exaggerate my status as the Christians have done with the son of Mary. Verily, I am only a servant, so refer to me as the servant of Allah and His Messenger.”

Thanks for the detailed response. I fully understand that this practice of asking the Prophet صَلّى الله عليه وسلّم, to ask ALLAH something for (to make dua for us) is a big mistake because he is not in this world. It is alright to ask someone who is alive to make dua for us.

However, my question is that will this “big mistake “ will be considered “shirk”.

This is important for us to know because a situation is going on in our family.

Please tell us if this is shirk or it is a sin but not rising to the degree of shirk

It will not be considered shirk. Thus, we can consider it a big mistake.
