  • Paying Zakat On Top Of Taxes

    Salamalikum,

Living aboard we pay almost 30% of our income to taxes. After that do we still have to pay Zakat on our saving?

Secondly, person earing and saving more and person earning and saving less both are paying 2.5% of Zakat. How come it is fair as one has more and should contribute to society more?

    Regards,

    Agha

Zakat is a form of worship and everyone who meets the nisab requirements should dispense it. Any taxes paid to the government can be deducted from ones’s total zakat obligations.

Zakat on savings / assets is 2.5% and is due once a year. There is also a production zakat that can be 5%, 10%, or 20% of one’s earnings, and it becomes due at the time of an earning.

You may enter appropriate numbers in our Zakat Calculator after reading the description for each box. When you reach the end, it will generate a statement showing you exactly what you owe after any applicable deductions, and what percentage was applied to each category. It is also a great way to learn the sharia of zakat.
