God made different models for human and chose the best of them and gave it the soul. But what if, one of those models were chosen to be monkeys, hence some of the similarity? Is this a possibility?

Similarity is not a convincing evidence that two species have the same origin.
It could have been possible that humans and apes might have the same ancestors but we are told by God that it is not the fact. Adam was the first human and he was made as a human in the first place. See the verses Sura sajda 32: 6-9
