Unless I’ve misunderstood Ghamidi sahib, I believe he’s said that in classical fiqh there’s no specific punishment for blasphemy.

Someone gave me this in reply. This is not meant to argue in favor of capital punishment for blasphemy, would just like clarification.

Ibn al-Mundhir (may Allah have mercy on him) said: (8th century)

The majority of scholars are agreed that the one who impugns the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) is to be executed.

    See: Tafseer al-Qurtubi, 8/82

Al-Khattaabi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: (9th century)

I do not know of any of the Muslims who differed concerning the obligation of executing him.

    Ma’aalim as-Sunan, 3/295

Qadi lyaad (may Allah have mercy on him) said: (10th century)

It is the Mazhab of Malik that who ever says something that belittles the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) should be executed without any warning!

The point is, If a Muslim commits blasphemy he is executed for becoming a murtad or apostate. There is no separate punishment prescribed for blasphemy in shariah and Fiqh.
