  • Quran 74:6 – Doing A Favor To Expect Something Good In Return In Business

It’s mentioned in Surah Al Mudassir that one should not do a favor in hopes of receiving a bigger favor in return.

In business, it’s a common practice to give as much value to a visitor as possible in hopes that he will become your customer. For example, companies give away free ebooks on their sites so the visitor, when he wants to purchase a product, he will prefer you over your competitors, according to the law of reciprocity.

But I don’t want to use this law to manipulate people into buying my products even if they don’t want to. I just know doing favors is generally a good thing but the person receiving the favor might end up buying from me even if he does not want to, and buys just because he wants to return the favor.

Is there anything wrong in this when it comes to business? When does doing the favor become a bad thing?

Surah Al Mudassir starts with reference to the Prophet (PBUH). That is general consensus.

Furthermore Ghamidi Sahab translates 74:6 as commanding the Prophet (PBUH) to not think that he is doing a favor and hence reduce his effort, thinking it is good enough for a reward from God at some point. It has nothing to do with ordinary man seeking return for his favors.

O you enwrapped in the shawl! Arise and enhance the warning. Proclaim the greatness of your Lord only, cleanse the apparel of your soul, keep away from the filth of polytheism and [see that] you do not discontinue your endeavour regarding it to be more than enough, (Qur’an 74:1-6)

    ————————————————————————————————————————
It is human nature of man to seek reward and avoid punishment. Deen simply wants man to not forget the reward and punishment of Hereafter. There is nothing wrong with doing a favor and seeking a reward for it while also remembering Allah for a reward too. Those who do favor only to seek a worldly reward but do not care about reward of Allah, it is then the issue is problematic.

There are some who say, “Our Lord! Grant us Your bounties in this world,” but they will have no share in the Hereafter. Yet there are others who say, “Our Lord! Grant us the good of this world and the Hereafter, and protect us from the torment of the Fire.” It is they who will receive a heavenly reward for the good they have done. And Allah is swift in reckoning. (Qur’an 2:200-202)

It is a simple marketing strategy and as long as there is nothing immoral being done, religion has no obection on such marketing tactics.
