In Al Bayan Ghamidi sb. has translated the term “Taba” in Ayat 117 of Surah At Tawba to “mercy”, whereas in simple arabic it translates to “forgive”. Kindly clarify. Thanks!

The translation is made according to the word or the end for which the word is used. The literal meaning of Taba is to pay attention or turn to someone. Then it proceeds to the meaning of forgiveness. In the translation of Ghamidi saheb it is well translated according to the literal meaning along with the purpose that the attention is to show His mercy.
