    Assalamualaikum. I’ve heard Ghamidi Sahab mention that there are no real differences in the Sunnah. However, there is a difference of opinion regarding zakat eligibility between the Hanafi and Shafi‘i schools. The former holds that zakat is due on all gold, while the latter maintains that it applies only to stored or reserved gold, not to the gold that is in personal use. This seems like a significant difference—please explain. JazakAllah khair

    There is consensus on Sunnah that items of personal use are exempt from Zakat. The difference lies in the application of this Sunnah. Even hanafi jurists consider items of personal use as being exempt from Zakat but Gold according to them does not fall within definition of items of personal use. They cite certain ahadith in support of their view.

    Ghamidi Sahab is of view that Gold of personal use is also exempt from Zakat as being items of personal use.
