  • Are Women Who Post Pictures Online Causing Fitna?

Posted by Torik Kaddafi on October 1, 2025 at 3:11 am

I saw a post on the internet where a woman posted a photo of herself online, and then in the comments section, someone (let’s call this person X) commented that she had committed a grave sin. X said that the photo she posted on the internet could be a source of fitna, which would immediately become a grave sin. X also said that anything that could be a source of fitna must be avoided.

X then told the woman to delete her post and asked her to wear a niqab to avoid fitna. X believed that this was in accordance with Surah Al-Ahzab verse 59, where Allah asked the Prophet to tell his wives to extend their veils so they would not be disturbed.

    Is X’s statement correct?

A woman or her photo are the same for the people who look at them. If they are not indecent or inappropriate dress, they are ok.

Women are not obliged to hide herself for the men who are not well trained to behave themselves. The Qur’an has asked men to guard their gazes when they see women and women are asked to guard their gazes when they see men.

The verse 59 is about the mischivious people who used to tease the women when with excuses. The women were asked to put on a veil to indicate that they were not slave girls who could be an easy target but they belonged to good families. Then God says that even after this measure they won’t stop their harrassment they would be punished by the government and removed from madina.

Yes, sir, I think the same way you do.

I mean, why should we be afraid that someone will slander us? Someone can slander us at any time, whether we are doing good or bad deeds. So, worrying about something we don’t even know is a little silly.

Perhaps if we knew that someone was going to slander us, we could use a more effective method than deleting photos and wearing a niqab. Surah Al-Ahzab verse 59 is an example of the Prophet’s situation when someone tried to harm his family. The Prophet’s approach at that time was appropriate for the era and circumstances. If someone wanted to slander us through our photos today, we could report it to the police or clarify online that this person is slandering me. Every era has its own way of dealing with problems.

Even if we ourselves do something bad, it is not justified for someone to slander us. For example, if a woman takes a photo of herself wearing inappropriate clothing at home and posts it on social media, this is a minor sin (if she wears inappropriate clothing in places that are not appropriate, such as places of worship and places that do not conform to norms, then this can be a major sin).

In conclusion, it is not right for someone to slander another person, even if they have done something wrong. We also do not need to worry if our actions cause others to slander us, because those actions are not our responsibility!

      Is my understanding correct, sir?
