  • Hadith Regarding Living Among Non-Muslims

Assalam o alaikum. I have a very genuine question which is important to me right now in life.

Is it permissible for Muslims born in Muslim/Islamic countries to immigrate to non-Muslim countries (USA, CA, UK, AUS, EUR etc.) just for the sake of better quality of lifestyle and job/business? I have researched about it a bit and found that almost all/majority Muslim scholars are united on the fact that it is not permitted to do so because of the fitnah for oneself, and the next generations and because of the non Islamic laws regarding everything from interest, sexuality, alcohol, food etc. They base their opinion on the Hadith 2645 Sunan Abu Dawood:

Narrated Jarir ibn Abdullah: “The Messenger of Allah صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم sent an expedition to Khath’am. Some people sought protection by having recourse to prostration, and were hastily killed. When the Prophet صلی ‌اللہ ‌علیہ ‌وسلم heard that, he ordered half the blood-wit to be paid for them, saying: I am not responsible for any Muslim who stays among polytheists. They asked: Why, Messenger of Allah? He said: Their fires should not be visible to one another. Abu Dawud said: Hushaim, Mamar, Khalid bin al-Wasiti and a group of narrators have also narrated it, but did not mention Jarir.”

Please help me regarding this matter. What does this hadith/narration mean taking the full context in perspective?

    Jazak Allah

I don’t know where did you get the unanimous consensus of the scholars that immigration to non Muslims countries is forbidden or inappropriate.

A lot of Muslims scholars are living there, working and serving Islam.

The life is a test and one cannot run away from a test. You have ample chances to put yourself in fitna in missing countries too. In the western world no one force you to do anything against your faith. We know that the prophet himself sent Muslims to Habsha to take asylum.

The hadith You quoted was in a given situation in the time of the prophet when he was launching an attack on the polytheists of Hijaz and it was made obligatory for every Muslim to migrate to madina.

      hi just a follow-up question.
There are certain things that should be fulfilled for a Muslim to migrate and live under the non Muslim countries,
like taking asylum as you mentioned and some other extreme situations.
Can you please clarity a bit that there is no such ruling by Prophet (PBUH) about this matter, and also is it 100% sure that these saying were just in that particular time and situation?
      thanks

Every thing is allowed unless something is declared prohibited. Or it has something objectionable to make it prohibited. There is no prohibition the Muslims to live among the non Muslims.

Living in a society where the non Muslims are in minority or majority is the same.
