It is not authentically proven that Hazrat Ali (rta) was born inside kaba.

The sources usually quoted on the internet as a copy paste exercise are mostly by people belonging to Shia school of thought to make their point across and all of these sources are either weak, lack authentic chain of transmission and are mostly story telling without any basis to back those claims up.

In this context however, following are the two sources worthy of some discussion:

First narration is in Mustadrak lil Hakim:

أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَحْمَدَ بْنِ بَالَوَيْهِ، ثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ الْحَرْبِيُّ، ثَنَا مُصْعَبُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ، فَذَكَرَ نَسَبَ حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ وَزَادَ فِيهِ، وَأُمُّهُ فَاخِتَةُ بِنْتُ زُهَيْرِ بْنِ أَسَدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعُزَّى، وَكَانَتْ وَلَدَتْ حَكِيمًا فِي الْكَعْبَةِ وَهِيَ حَامِلٌ، فَضَرَبَهَا الْمَخَاضُ، وَهِيَ فِي جَوْفِ الْكَعْبَةِ، فَوَلَدَتْ فِيهَا فَحُمِلَتْ فِي نِطَعٍ، وَغُسِلَ مَا كَانَ تَحْتَهَا مِنَ الثِّيَابِ عِنْدَ حَوْضِ زَمْزَمَ، وَلَمْ يُولَدْ قَبْلَهُ، وَلَا بَعْدَهُ فِي الْكَعْبَةِ أَحَدٌ

قَالَ الْحَاكِمُ: وَهَمُّ مُصْعَبٍ فِي الْحَرْفِ الْأَخِيرِ، فَقَدْ تَوَاتَرَتِ الْأَخْبَارِ أَنَّ فَاطِمَةَ بِنْتَ أَسَدٍ وَلَدَتْ أَمِيرَ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَلِيَّ بْنَ أَبِي طَالِبٍ كَرَّمَ اللَّهُ وَجْهَهُ فِي جَوْفِ الْكَعْبَةِ

Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Ballawi told us on the authority of Abraham Bin Ishaq al-Harbi on the authority of Musab bin Abdullah – he mentioned the lineage of Hakem bin Hizam and added:

”His mother is Fakhita bint e Zuhair bin Asad bin Abd al-Uzza, She gave birth to Hakem in Kaba. She was pregnant and labor struck her while she was inside the Kaba and Hakem was born there on leathery carpet and clothes beneath her were washed on the well of Zamzam. No one was born in kaba either before or after him”.

Imam Hakim said: “Musab is mistaken at the end, the news has become frequent (famous/being commonly said) that Fatima bint-e-Asad gave birth to leader of the Momineen, Ali bin Abi Talib, may God ennoble his countenance, in the Kaba”.

As the original narration relates to birth of Sahabi Hakem bin Hizam (rta) inside kaba, but Imam Hakim had added his own comments at the end, opposing this narration to support claim of the birth of Hazrat Ali (rta) inside Kaba.

– Firstly, to this claim, Imam Jalal-ud-din Suyuti mentioned in his book that:

قَالَ الزُّبَيْرُ بْنُ بَكَّارٍ: كَانَ مَوْلِدُ حَكِيمٍ فِي جَوْفِ الْكَعْبَةِ.

“Zubair bin Bukkar said that Hakem was born inside kaba”.

And then he said on the authority of Hafiz Ibn-e-Hajr Asqalani (by calling him sheikh-ul-Islam in Hadith discipline):

قَالَ شَيْخُ الْإِسْلَامِ: وَلَا يُعْرَفُ ذَلِكَ لِغَيْرِهِ، وَمَا وَقَعَ فِي مُسْتَدْرَكِ الْحَاكِمِ مِنْ أَنَّ عَلِيًّا وُلِدَ فِيهَا ضَعِيف

“Sheikh-u-Islam said: ‘And no one else is known for that, and what is mentioned in Mustadrak-lil-Hakim regarding birth of Ali inside it (kaba) is weak”.

– Secondly, to this claim, Ibn Al-Mulaqqin said in his book:

حَكِيم هَذَا ولد فِي جَوف الْكَعْبَة وَلَا يعرف أحد ولد فِيهَا غَيره، وَأما مَا رُوِيَ عَن عَلّي رَضي اللهُ عَنهُ أَنه ولد فِيهَا فضعيف

“Hakem (bin Hizam) was born inside the Kaba and there was no one else known to be born inside it, as regards what was reported about Ali (rta) being born inside it (kaba) is weak”.

Second narrative can be found in Book Manaqib-e-Ali by Ibn-ul-Maghazli–Page 26

And following are the comments of Imam Ibn-e-Taimiya on this book by Ibn-ul-Maghazli:

قَدْ جَمَعَ فِي كِتَابِهِ مِنَ الْأَحَادِيثِ الْمَوْضُوعَاتِ مَا لَا يَخْفَى أَنَّهُ كَذِبٌ عَلَى مَنْ لَهُ أَدْنَى مَعْرِفَةٍ بِالْحَدِيثِ

“He has collected in his book fabricated hadiths and this is not hidden from anyone who has the slightest knowledge of hadith that it is based on lie”.

Conclusion:

Hence the narrative of Hazrat Ali (rta) being born inside Kaba is proven to be untrue and inauthentic. The best that can be said from the available sources is that it is more probable that Hakem bin Hizam (rta) was born inside Kaba.
