She is supposed to cover her bosom. Neck is not included. It is included in the exception given in the verse, that that what stays exposed may stay exposed. Women usually do not cover their necks.

But isn’t the jewelry worn on neck to be covered?

What does it means when said expect face, hands and feet as the area under chin isn’t included in face

The neck is usually not covered; therefore, according to the vders, it can stay exposed. Illa ma zahar minha.

But if we apply this understanding many of the beautifications aren’t hidden even the one worn on chest area ie women do cover their chest with a scarf but wear jewellery on top of it. Would that be permissible to show? Also arms are also not hidden but don’t they come in awrah

Zeenat on the chest area has been mentioned to be covered, so it has to be covered.

Awrah is only the private parts. The adjacent parts are covered for better coverage, as a preemptive measure. Arms are not awrah.

But what if the verse illa ma Zahra means that God set the standard of covering, women at that time. And so those covering style should be applied generally like prophet said offer prayer as you see me offering

There are two different things. The parts of of body for zeenat to be covered and awrah. The parts of zeenat which stay usually exposed are not the parts of awrah.

Awrah are the private parts which have to covered all the time.

Zeenat is done on exposed parts of body like face, hands, feet, neck, chest. Here God has allowed to keep exposed the parts on which zeenat is done, this includes face hands and feet. Chest area can be exposed therefore God especially mentioned to cover it.

As far as awrah is concerned, it is only the private parts. The adjacent parts to private parts are covered to different extents in different cultures. You may suggest that arms should be covered but it belongs to preemptive measures and here people may have different opinions.

If awarah means only private parts then In a Hadith why did prophet called women awarah

  • Dr. Irfan Shahzad

    That hadith is not authentic.

The statement can be taken as a metaphor for modesty. As it is said, Woman, Thy Name is Beauty.

    Not every saying is literal.

The Quran says that woman can expose their zeenat, which stays exposed. Moreover, God has allowed her to show their hidden zeenat to her mehram relatives. If the whole body of a woman is awrah, it must be covered all the time, just like the private parts.

      Right Jazak’Allah

I have a question that is it necessary to have a scarf all the time round her chest even Infront of mahram relatives or one can remove the scarf

Chest is a private part of women. It should be covered to fulfill the command of guarding the private parts. Now how she covers it depends upon her and the culture.

If she wears a shirt but doesn’t wrap a scarf around her chest when at home or among family members would that be alright or not.

And you said that awrah means only private parts but in Quran it uses the term furooj for private parts.

Awrah means the thing to cover. And the essential to cover is the private parts. The rest is covered for bettert covering and for decency.

If the shirt is loose enough to cover her chest well, and make the body not prominent, it not necessary to put on srarf.

How much covering is required Infront of mahram.

And if covering the chest all the time required then how would a women wear or embellish her chest area that means those embellishments are always to be covered even Infront of mahram and women you are close with

There is a Hadith where prophet Muhammad s.a.w say that a man shouldn’t look at the awrah of another man nor a women should look at the awrah of another woman.

Why would believers look at the private parts of others when they are fully covered always bcz people wouldn’t be roaming around naked that easily at prophets time. Then was he referring to the adjacent parts of body?

To show zeenah is not to show awrah. Women are allowed explicitly to show their zeenat to their mehram. See verse 24:31.

Seeing Awrah means seeing the private parts.

I mean women must have opted some beautification on their bosoms but you said earlier that the chest should be covered even Infront of mahram to guard the private parts. When a women exposes her zeenah on her chest her bosom area would be visible (covered by shirt ofc but still the rise of chest could be sensed) what to do in this case

  • Dr. Irfan Shahzad

She simply needs to manage it appropriately. It is not impossible to display adornment (zeenah) without revealing the body’s contours beneath the clothing.

Remember that religion, by its nature, is meant to be easy. The chest area, like the hips, whose outline is more visible, for both men and women, should be covered to a reasonable extent, but it is not possible to conceal them completely so that no outline is ever visible. Human beings are only required to do what is within their capacity — not what is impossible or excessively difficult.

      Narrated by ibn e Abbas

The prophet said the thigh is awrah.

      Narrated by Ali r.a

One should not look at the thighs of anyone whether living or dead

      Another narration is

What is to be covered of our awrah and what to leave open he replied protect it except from your wife and what your right hand possess he asked what about a man with other man. He said if you are not able to let anyone see it then do so

In these Hadith the thighs are also called awrah does this mean awrah doesn’t necessarily mean private part only? In the 3 Hadith a man is asking about awrah like isn’t it innate human nature to cover private parts why would someone ask about it how much to cover. Then prophet says if you are “able” not anyone else to see it do so. Doesn’t it mean that awrah includes other areas too than private parts.

And old women are allowed to not wear the traditional hijab when they don’t intend to show their beauties can you elaborate what does showing beauties here mean. And when the Quran says that don’t show your zeenat to anyone except so and so here most of the scholars interpret bosom area also included in women’s zeenat and say that’s why it must be covered. One can say that a women is allowed to beautify herself Infront of the people she is allowed to while her chest area’s contour is visible but necessarily not that visible that it seems immodest

Thigh is extended Awrah because it is only the private parts which are actual awrah.

Zeenat is not body parts, it is something external applied on body or dress to beautify it. Old women are allowed to shake their ornaments or make up, not the body.

Why many tafsir say that when God asked not to show your ornaments this includes your bodies as well as adornments you wear externally
