Hurmat Vs Fitrat
If distinguishing pure and unpure is the natural instinct of humans, and ,as also mentioned in meezan that humans know which animal serves which purpose like horses etc…
Then would the Arabs or muslims eat donkeys unless prophet Muhammad(s) declared it unpure..
Why couldn’t arbas decide on their own, out of their fitrat, that donkeys are for carrying goods and not for using as food…
And even some scholars also declare elephant halal, although not generally accepted view..

These are just academic opinions; in practice, they did not eat donkeys and knew that these animals were not for eating. You can see the world around you, the nations that do not know Wahi, they too, usually, do not eat horses and donkeys.

What about the hadees in which sahab were ordered to flip the pot in which donkeys were being cooked…probably at the end of some war…

Narrated Ibn Abi
Aufa: We were afflicted with hunger during the besiege of Khaibar, and when it was the day of (the battle of) Khaibar, we slaughtered the donkeys and when the pots got boiling (with their meat). Allah's Apostle made an announcement that all the pots should be upset and that nobody should eat anything of the meat of the donkeys. We thought that the Prophet prohibited that because the Khumus had not been taken out of the booty (i.e. donkeys); other people said, "He prohibited eating them forever." The sub-narrator added, "I asked Said bin Jubair who said, ‘He has made the eating of donkeys’ meat illegal for ever.”) (Bukhari 3155) -
About these animals, people have chosen different habits. So, it depends on them to eat or not. Moslty people are not inclined to eat them.
