Is My Income Halal If The Work I Do Causes A Minor Sin?
Posted by Torik Kaddafi on May 15, 2025 at 4:15 amI know that engaging in work that can lead to major sins such as making pornography, theft, phone scams, etc. is strictly prohibited, and the income from that is also strictly prohibited
But what about work that leads to minor sins such as being an actor with kissing scenes, boxing, and making novels or comics with intimacy scenes. Is the income halal if the work causes a minor sin?

Is My Income Halal If The Work I Do Causes A Minor Sin?

Moderator May 19, 2025 at 12:40 amA God fearing Muslim should be very conscious about such roles and its better to avoid such roles involving this kind of intimacy. But If the primary activity is Halal and that activity forms significant portion of one’s job, then the income earned from that activity would be Halal too. As for the small objectionable portions, one shold strive to find a better alternative so to stay away even from that kind of impurity.

Member May 19, 2025 at 1:02 amThis means that if most of the activities are halal, then the income is halal.
However, if most of the activities lead to minor sins, then the income is not halal.
An example could be like a comic artist who makes romance comics but he needs a few intimacy scenes to add reality to the story.
Unlike the comic artist whose comic is full of intimacy scenes (explicit fawahish elements). So if this second case is clearly absolute haraam, is that right sir?

Moderator July 31, 2025 at 5:43 amThis is correct as far as income is concerned. However, from a moral side, a Muslim should avoid adding intimate scenes altogether. Why commit even a minor sin.

Member July 31, 2025 at 7:57 amOkay sir, what is your opinion about UFC and boxing? Their job is to engage in combat by hurting someone as a sport, and I believe that hurting someone is a minor sin.
But there is one issue here: since they injure people in public as entertainment, does this constitute committing a sin openly in public? As mentioned in this hadith:
Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) saying, “All the sins of my followers will be forgiven except those of the Mujahirin (those who commit a sin openly or disclose their sins to the people). An example of such disclosure is that a person commits a sin at night and though Allah screens it from the public, then he comes in the morning, and says, ‘O so-and-so, I did such-and-such (evil) deed yesterday,’ though he spent his night screened by his Lord (none knowing about his sin) and in the morning he removes Allah’s screen from himself.”

Moderator August 6, 2025 at 1:20 amUFC or Boxing is not an open sin in this sense. It is done in a controlled environment with certain rules to be followed all the time. However, it is indeed a discouraged act but not something which can be declared outright Haram.
Hadith refers to the attitude of rebellion or arrogance, which leads a person to commit sins openly and disclose them to others in open rebellion to God.

Member August 9, 2025 at 11:58 pmFrom your statement, I would like to convey my understanding.
You said that boxing cannot be considered an open sin as mentioned in this hadith. This is because boxing is carried out in a controlled environment with certain rules that must be followed. This is so that this activity does not fall into a major sin (i.e., murder). Additionally, this activity cannot be performed just anywhere, as doing so in public places and causing public unrest could lead to arrogance.
From this, I find a significant difference between disobedience and arrogance. Disobedience only results in minor sins, for example, if we are told to dispose of trash properly but choose to do so carelessly anyway, it only results in a minor sin.
However, if we dispose of trash with the intention of causing significant environmental damage, do so in public as if mocking the rules, or perform such actions openly in a way that causes social issues in the surrounding area, and also disclose it in public as if there is no sense of shame despite knowing the action is wrong, then this is considered arrogant.
Unlike boxing or UFC, although they engage in activities that harm opponents and are watched in public, they do not do so recklessly like a troublemaker. They do it purely for sports, and do not fall into major sins (such as murder or torture) because there are various rules preventing such actions. And even if someone claims to be doing boxing, it does not fall under the category of arrogance.
Therefore, I can conclude that disobedience (minor sins) can become arrogance (major sins) through several ways, namely:1. Doing it in public without shame (not appropriate for the situation and environment)2. Leading to major sins (such as indecent exposure and the like)3. Harming someone’s life or the surrounding environment4. Revealing it in public without shame
Am i right sir?

Moderator August 21, 2025 at 2:53 amIt is not possible to make a list of all the sins. It is important to note that arrogance represents an attitude of rebellion which can make any minor sin a major sin. If the motive is to disobey God knowingly & intentionally, then it is arrogance.

Member August 21, 2025 at 5:33 am“If the motive is to disobey God knowingly and intentionally,” what you mean by this sentence is that he does not care about the rules of the Quran and Sunnah at all, and in his heart he does not believe in the Quran, right?
However, if he commits a minor sin but still believes in the Quran and does not try to commit a major sin, does that mean he is not arrogant?

Member September 4, 2025 at 1:48 pmFrom your statement in this post, I understand that a Muslim who is still trying to avoid major sins would not commit minor sins with the intention of rebelling against Allah, because even if he commits minor sins, there are emotional factors that accompany his actions, whether he does them intentionally or not.
Is my understanding correct, sir?

Member September 7, 2025 at 5:23 amOkay, sir, one more question.
In the previous hadith, there are two types of people described: those who commit sins openly and those who reveal their sins to others.
For those who commit sins openly, it has been explained that if they do so in a specific place (controlled and monitored so as not to lead to major sins and not disturb others), such as in boxing and UFC, then it is not considered committing sins openly.
Then what about people who reveal their sins to others? What are some examples, sir? So that it can be easier to understand.

-

Moderator September 11, 2025 at 12:03 amWhy is one exposing his sins in the first place? boasting is a necessary result of such an act. It is something very serious and one should keep a check on such actions.

Member September 11, 2025 at 1:14 amYes, sir, I understand that. If I decide instinctively, I can easily guess which people are acting arrogantly and which are not, but if I think about it carefully, it becomes difficult for me.
For example, if I reveal to the public or the people around me that I have cheated on my wife, then clearly that is an arrogant act.
However, I cannot see arrogance when someone reveals that they are boxing or an actor performing a kissing scene. Because when they do it, they are in a specific place and it is not overt and controlled.
That is why I am still confused about how to distinguish between people who act arrogantly and those who do not.
Please guide me, sir.

Moderator September 15, 2025 at 12:24 amIt is not your job to distinguish among others who is arrogant and who is not.
It is however your job to not be arrogant yourself and you have been given a moral compass by God to be the best judge of your character.

I ask this because I’m afraid of making a mistake if I just follow my instincts.
