“No man should be alone with a woman unless there is a mahram with them“

    Narrated Ibn `Abbas :

The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “No man should stay with a lady in seclusion except in the presence of a Dhu- Muhram.” A man stood up and said, “O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! My wife has gone out intending to perform the Hajj and I have been enrolled (in the army) for such-and-such campaign.” The Prophet (ﷺ) said, “Return and perform the Hajj with your wife.”

    Al bukhari 5233

Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “No man should be alone with a woman unless there is a mahram with them.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari (1862) and Muslim (1341)

But what if u are in a room or something… and there are a few men( like a professor teaching students or discussing patients) and u the only woman. No one is your mahram, it is kinda of a private conference room but it’s an academic or professional environment. What I mean to ask is, having a mahram specifically is kinda hard all the time but making sure there are alteast multiple people is easier but the Hadith is specifically mentioning Mehram. What I don’t understand about the Hadith is that if u have more than 2 people in a room, then it’s not really being alone is it, regardless of whether the other people are mahram or not.

Presence of other people cannot be called seclusion between the opposite gender. The rationale (‘illat’) of the directive was seclusion (‘tanhai’), so if it is countered by any means i.e. by including other people as in this case, the restriction will be lifted.

But then why specifically use the word mehram?

This is a preferred way to counter seclusion between opposite gender. This does not mean that if a person has no mehram available altogether or at that moment, then other counter measures cannot be used.

At the the time of the Prophet (SWS), during public gatherings, men and women used to interact and the Prophet (SWS) never asked them to bring a mehram before such interactions.
