Masjid aqsa in quran is Jerusalem as it was chosen place by God for Jews.
First organised direction of prayers for jews was center of temple of Solomon built at the temple mount. It was totally destroyed.The masjid with golden dome was built by Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan ibn al-Hakam.
According to Ghamidi sb, it is of no importance to us religiously. however, as prophet Mohammad saw prayed in that direction so people put sacred value on it. -
