Origin And Sunnah Status Of Brisk Walking In Sa‘i Between Ṣafā And MarwahAssalāmu ‘alaykum, My question is regarding the sa‘i between Ṣafā and Marwah. Why do pilgrims performing Ḥajj or ‘Umrah walk briskly (or run) between the two hills? I’m aware that a popular explanation connects this to the story of Hājar and Ismā‘īl, but since Ghamidi sahab has clarified that this story is not authentic and that Ṣafā and Marwah were actually the qurbangāh (sacrifice site) around which Ismā‘īl was made to pass ,I’m trying to understand the reason for this particular manner of walking. Also, as we know, certain practices are classified as Sunnah So my question is: Was this brisk walking or running between Ṣafā and Marwah also institutionalized by the Prophet (sws) as part of the Sunnah? If yes, what is its significance or reasoning? And if not, when and how did this practice become part of the Ḥajj and ‘Umrah rites?
