Women And Isbaal And The Implication For Men
Jami` at-Tirmidhi Book 24 Hadith 1731
Narrated Ibn ‘Umar: That the Messenger of Allah (Peace be upon him) said: “Whoever arrogantly drags his garment, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Judgement.” So Umm Salamah said: “What should the women do with their hems?” He said: “Slacken them a handspan.” So she said: “Then their feet will be uncovered.” He said: “Then slacken them a forearm’s length and do not add to that.”
Why is this permission given to women if the real thing was to stop arrogance? Was it not arrogant for women to do isbaal?
Also- this hadith seems to implicate that women should not uncover their feet- what relevance does this hold?

And the women part?

The manifestation of arrogance is an applied matter. At that time, this isbal was mainly associated with men as a symbol of arrogance and hence, the directive was mainly focused on men if you collect and analyse all the narrations on this matter. I think that women part has to do with God-Consciousness of women at that time and Prophet (sws) didn’t just dismiss it, but instead, He (sws) gave due regard to their god-fearing reaction as well..

So the answer to someone trying to argue that women have to cover their feet would be that the prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم didn’t actually start the conversation of covering the feet- implying that women could pull it up if they wanted.

I think with that someone we need to first have a discussion on Sources of religion, their mutual relationship and how does hadith corpus interact with those sources. But at an isolated level, sure that response is valid.

Did Ghamidi Saab ever talk about this issue in any of his videos? I can’t find any video of him where he discussed about this incident of Umm Salamah (RA)
