I went through above discussion 32197. I still have one question. Here is the scenario:

A person living in US misses 10 fasts. Can he feed miskeen as fidya in other countries (e.g Pakistan). If yes, should he give the fidya based on dollar amount (10× one day meal expenses in USD) or it could be in PKR (10× one day meal expenses in PKR).

One can feed destitutes of any country but paying in one’s own currency seems more in-line with the spirit of the directive because fidya is an amount equal to one day meal i.e. what a person eats himself.

    1) If a person has been ill for several years, should he fast or pay a fidya after recovery?

Example:- If a person is sick for 10 years but after that he recovers and is able to fast. So in this case, is it obligatory for him to make up the fasts of so many years or should he pay a fidya?

    2) Is Fidya obligatorgy or recommended?

      1) One should keep all the remaining fasts.

      2) Fasting for remaining or leftover fasts is obligatory. Fidya is only under ‘Usar‘ when one cannot fast because of permanent illness.

“1) One should keep all the remaining fasts.”

Is it obligatory for him or recommendation?

      It is Obligatory.

Please refer to the following verse of Quran:

What if he is old and has some health problems?

I mean if someone has been seriously ill from 5-10 years and is now cured but still has some health related problems like diabetes, heart disease etc. Now the doctor told him that he can fast if he wants but it is better for him to avoid it.

In this case can he be excused if he does not keep all the remaining fasts of the previous years?

Seems like ‘Usar‘ where person can choose to not observe fast and pay Fidya for his fasts.

      Is fidya obligatory?

Since Quran abrogated Fidya verse with keeping a fast verse. Therefore, intention of Quran is very clear.

It is only when one is unable to observe his fasts on a permanent basis, directive of Fidya will be applied as an alternative to deal with such exception.

Okay, but regarding fidya, most of the moderators used the term “Can”. Even ghamidi sahab used the term “Karskte hai”.

So, does this mean that in such cases , Fidya is a highly recommended act, but not an obligation?.

It will be obligatory in such case.
