Muslim are not allowed to marry a polytheist or adulterer as per the injunctions of Quran and this is because a Muslims is supposed to be the most sensitive about the greatest sin of polytheism which is intolerable to God. However, God has permitted to marry the women of the people of book because Christian’s polytheism is not a blatant one, but interpret their polytheism in term of monotheism and they believe that they believe in Oneness of God. Although their interpretation is not acceptable to God and to Muslims, yet it provides excuse or room for marry their women. However, marrying them is allowed with certain conditions:

only Muslim man can marry their women

they should marry them only when Muslims culturally or politically dominant.

Then the Muslims are warned not to lose their faith or they will face grave consequences.

This in fact is the matter of sensitivity a Muslim for his faith and moral sense to decide who he or she is going to marry.

Ahamdi case can be understood in the light of the case of the people of Book. If their interpretation in the case of monotheism provides room for marrying them with certain conditions, Ahmadi’s interpretation for prophethood may have the same room for marrying them with certain conditions.

In the end it is the individual whose sensitivity for his or her faith and moral values decides who he or she should marry.

We have no injunction from God to forbid such marriages.

But in our pakistani law we are not allowed to marry them nor they are under any circumstances.

      Pakistani law also legalizes interest,

It has a punishment (up till death penalty) for being a so-called “Gustaakh-e-Rusool”.

To summarise, everything isn’t according to Islam in the our constitution. U may say it’s illegal according to the constitution, but according to Islam, it’s perfectly legal.

      Stay Blessed!

It’s not always about the community one is following but about the personal belief too. If one believes in the finality of prophet Muhammad saw as it’s proved from Quran and hadees and there is no doubt . But that individual is born to be ahmadi and he is searching upon the truth about ghulam ahmed qadiani. I think it’s permissible to marry such individual as they are not gustakh e rasool .

Irfan Bhai. Doesn’t Quran state emphatically to marry only believing men and women? Is believing prophet Muhammad as a last prophet not required to be a believer?

I don’t know if Qadianis can be regarded as the people of the book. They deny concept of jihad and finality of prophet hood.

But this isn’t a new problem. There were many sects of Islam that changed many fundamentals like Taqdeer, Quran is a creation, knowledge of Iblees, etc etc

How were they regarded historically? Kafir or Ahl e kitab?

  • Dr. Irfan Shahzad

We have no authority to declare any one kafir if he or she insists that they are Muslims. It is the authority of God to declare someone kafir. the people of book is a factual position after which they are titled, though they were not holding the true teachings of the books.

anyone who claims to be Muslim, no matter how erroneous his beliefs are to us, he or she will be regarded as Muslim.

Brother Irfan, generally what you are saying is right, but more specifically if somone is openly rejecting the fundamental beliefs of Islam, especially committing Shirk, how can we let them say that they are Muslims.

So if an Idol worshipper decides to call himself a Muslim, we should allow them to do so?

In that sense once these groups increase in size and start spreading thier word, soon it will be totally confusing what a Muslim means.

I still think if a group doesn’t believe in one Allah, doesn’t believe in Quran or prophet Muhammad or amends Quran, such group should not be allowed to call themselves Muslims. Any other differences, perhaps can be accepted as subjective interpretations.

Nadeem sahib as matter of fact all such mal-beliefs have been practicing by Muslims you can witness it in many communities of Muslims, but no one bother to declare them kafir. Islam got never confused except for those who don’t bother to consult Quran and Sunnah.

We can consider a person completely wrong in his beliefs but we have no authority to call them kafir, as they have no authority call us kafir.

Theoretically u r correct, we can not declare anyone kafir or non-muslims

But we can not use this in legal consideration regarding marriage, divorce, inheritance, child custody, adultery etc.

There r many sects who insist they r muslims, Agha Khanis, Daruz, Nusairys, Yazidis, nation of islam etc. they all have 3 things in common adding another source of wahi, denying finality of prophethood of Muhammad SAW, denying 1 or more basic tenet of islam

Sahaba didn’t regard such people as Muslims either

Qadianis believe in another prophet and believe jihad is not part of Islam anymore in any way shape or form.

I do not believe they can be regarded as Ahl e Kitab because firstly they didn’t receive revelation before and separate from Quran and secondly from Sahaba’s reaction to such sects and personalities. They were rejected and sometime fought. Sahaba didn’t regard their belief in the tauheed and Quran as testimony of their ahl e kitab status.

I may be completely wrong so I would request to Please share any writings /lectures of Ghamidi sahab or any other scholar explaining the legal/academic reasonings.

We need not to legislate for people who call themselves Muslims but we find their beliefs inappropriate. Marriage is to be decided by the individuals and their families. There is no discrimination between Muslims and non muslim in inheritance .

Sahaba had to regard the claims of hypocrites that they were Muslims . Allah called them believers in Quran because they call themselves believers

  • Faraz Siddiqui

Absolutely true, hypocrites considered to be Muslim because they declared belief in tauheed, finality of Muhammad SAW & Quran as last wahi. Anyone or group adhered to these 3 things will be considered muslim no matter (khawarij were fought but considered muslims, deviant philosophers were considered muslim, today’s certain barelvi groups are considered muslims too)

But sahaba didn’t consider Musailama, Sajah and their followers as muslims or any group that doesn’t fulfill above mentioned criteria

Is there any example from Sahaba that they considered any person/group muslim even though they openly denied any of the 3 things I mentioned?

Today’s Qadianis, Nusarys, Agha khanis bear no resemblance to the hypocrites at all.

Inheritance is definitely different. In Qadianis and Agha Khanis there’s an obligatory tax for the organization (jama’at) from the inheritance.

Musailma and other claimants of prophethood did not make Taweel or their beliefs but added their belief on their own authority. Taweel has been accepted as excuse by God. Trinity is declared as polytheism in Quran still the Christians were not all polytheists but the people of book and Muslims are allowed to marry their women. They were called Nasaara, as they adopted this name for themselves.

It is the authority of God not to accept a Taweel and declare someone or group kaafir, but still we find that God gives concession. as far as we are concerned we have no authority declare anyone kaafir. it is intrusion into the domain of God’s authority.

  • Faraz Siddiqui

    Member July 13, 2021 at 12:12 pm

Mirza sahab did nothing but taweel for his claims (unless u used taweel in some academic meaning) zilli nabi, barozi nabi, maseel e maseeh etc

Musailama and others did not deny prophethood of Muhammad SAW but added their own prophethood. Their claims weren’t accepted. Atleast 3-4 claimants were at the time of Muhammad SAW and he didn’t accept their taweel/reasons

The status of Ahl e kitaab was given to followers of 2 different prophets before Muhammad SAW and yes, it’s Allah’s decision But Allah also confirmed the prophethood of Moses and Jesus AS.

Would u consider Hindus and Buddhist as Ahl e kitab cuz there is tauheed and Akhira concepts in there scriptures? 1 group is polytheist and other believe in but supreme consciousness?

Since no other prophethood can be confirmed, there’s can’t be any other Ahl e kitaab status.

What is required to be a muslim is clear. We can say someone is muslim if he/she is accepting tauheed, finality of prophethood and Quran as last wahi even if he/she doesn’t believe in his/her heart. We don’t verify what’s inside hearts but what they say with tongue

But if they r open about their beliefs then we can declare them non-muslims.

Irfan sahab you know deen more than me so Plz guide me towards any detailed sources and I will study insha Allah.
