    Aslamu Alaikum,

    1. In Surah Waqiah verse 7-14 Allah mentions about three groups of people. People of right, people of left and foremost people. Also states that the number of foremost people has/will decline as time moves forward. How do we explain that (given the Islam is the fastest growing religion)? Wouldn’t this imply that quality of good teachers and scholars has continued to decline since the time of Prophet Muhammad PBUH and that most of today’s scholars generally don’t have the concrete understanding of religion and it will only get worse in the future?

    2. Couldn’t sufis use this same concept to argue that this implies the diminishing of knowledge of inner self and inner connection with Allah and the preoccupation of today’s scholars with things that are not going to be helpful to an average Muslim in the next life?

I don’t think we should limit it to scholars only and definitely not to all scholars. It is about overall attitude of Muslims towards religion and their over all deteriorating strength of Eman. Whether it be Sufis using this argument or someone else, the cure only lies in Quran, because the main reason for this deterioration is the fact that Quran doesn’t hold a central value in our lives anymore.

As for the specificity of these verses (and other related verses) is concerned, it is clear that Sabiqoon will always be in smaller number as compared to population of believers in general, with the only difference that in Prophet’s time, their number would be more in comparison to later times. But overall, their number would still be less.
