How Can We Reconcile Punishment Of The Grave Hadiths With The Quran?
If the punishment of the grave is not given in this earthly pit, what can we make of the following excerpts from the hadiths?
Jab janaazaa taiyaar kar ke rakh diyaa jaataa hai aur log ise apne kandho par utha lete hain toh agar vo nek ho toh kehta hai: mujhe jaldi aage le chalo aur agar vo nek naa ho toh vo apne ghar valo se kehta hai: afsos! tum mujhe kahan le jaa rahe ho? Insano ke alaava is ki aavaaz ko har cheez sunti hai. Agar insaan ise sun len toh behosh hojayen. (https://mohaddis.com/View/Sahi-Bukhari/T2/1316)
Toh vo kehta hai: Meraa Rab Allah hai….” … Phir kaafir aur iski maut ka zikar kiyaa aur farmaayaa: “Iski rooh iske jism mein lautaai jaati hai aur vo iske paas aate hain aur ise bithaate haina aur is se puchte hain…” (https://mohaddis.com/View/Abu-Daud/T2/4753)
In view of these hadiths, It looks like the punishment is given here in this wordly grave since:
(1) All creation save humans (also jinns, in another text) can hear the roaring of the person being punished.
(2) Also the person in the grave can hear the boot-steps of the attendants walking away from him shows that the punishment is given here on earth.
Moreover, the rooh being returned to the body here on earth before the day of Judgement contradicts the Quran which says:
“It is Allāh Who takes away the souls (Wafat) at the time of their death, and those that die not during their sleep. He keeps those (souls) for which He has ordained death and sends the rest for a term appointed. Verily, in this are signs for people who think deeply.” (39:42)
So Allah (SWT) keeps the souls for which He has ordained death, and returns others for which He has not ordained death to these earthly bodies. But this is for those who are alive.
