  • Decision Of Marriage & Freedom To Choose Partner As Per Quran?

Posted by Rayan Ahmad on September 11, 2024 at 3:56 pm

Where in the Quran God has said that the decision of marriage should be made by the boy and the girl. I know it sounds logical that they will spend their life together so the decision should be theirs.

But when we say God has given a woman or a man full freedom to choose their partner, where can we read God’s command on this?

The question should rather be: Did the Quran restrict the freedom of choice for men or women? As you pointed out, it is logical to allow individuals to choose their partner, and God did not impose limitations on this. The Quran presents marriage as a decision to be made by both man and woman, with no authority given to men to limit a woman’s freedom in choosing to marry someone else. Refer to the following verses:

    2: 32,34,35, 40

Thank you Dr. Irfan for your answer.

How are these verses related to my question?

These verses tell that men and women were making decisions for their marriages and former husbands were asked not to interfere what the women’s decisions of their second marriages.

I think either there was a mistake in your writing or perhaps I misunderstood.

From what I understood, verses 2:32, 34, 35, and 40 are the verses of the second Surah i.e. Al-Baqarah. Kindly correct me if I am mistaken, as these verses from Surah Al-Baqarah do not appear to align with our discussion.

    Following are the correct verses:

    Quran 2:232, Quran 2:234-235 & Quran 2:240.

It seems that one of the 2s got skipped in the earlier response.
