I am trying hard to understand Quran and most of the times I understand the meaning when I read with Tafsir and watching Ghamdi saab videos. However, many times I don’t understand the context as to why something is said or done in the first place. E.g. Chapter 5 verse 42, I understand Allah is telling Prophet on how to judge if Jews come to him but what I don’t understand is the historical context like why are they coming to him in the first place when they don’t believe in him? What kind of judgments they are after? etc.

Can anyone please suggest any tafsir or books that explains Quran verses with this context?

The Tafsir of Javed Ahmad Ghamidi, Al Bayan, and Mawlana Amin Ahsan Islahi’s Tafsir, Tadabbur e Quran, explain the verses with their context. You can find both here:

    https://www.javedahmedghamidi.org/#!/quran-home

Al Bayan also available in English here.

About 5: 42. The Jews were living in Madina, they had social interactions with the people of Madina. They had conversations on religion with the prophet. The prophet was then the ruler of the Madina and according to the treaty of Madina, Jews had agreed to accept the prophet’s authority in their disputes.

Thankyou Irfan bhai. I want to research a bit deeper than this. What are the historical books or sources that were used by these scholars that explain this situation of Medina and the behaviour of jews that led to these verses? Having a deeper historical understanding will help me develop better understanding of the verses

I am sorry your answer has confused me even more. In the videos Ghamdi saab is saying the chapters and verses themselves make everything clear and there is no need for historical context. I am trying to explain Quran to a new converted Muslim. Giving the simple translation of Quran without tafseer and context makes it impossible for anyone to understand so verses are not that simple as stated in the video without context.

Tafseers help establishing this context and understanding. So going back to the original question again, do you know any list of books/sources these scholars used for the tafseer? E.g. as mentioned above for surah Maida address is to Jews where Prophet was the ruler and had a state established and had agreements with some Jewish tribes as I read in tafseers. Where is this information in tafseers coming from? Must be some historical texts/books/reference materials. I am after that material.

In our epistemology, Quran is not studied in the light of individual historical narratives.

Quran is studied, among other things, in the light of its internal context, coherence and in the light of established history.

Please see for the principles of Understanding Quran:

      Discussion 55737

Historical narratives are only essential when Quran is explicitly referring to any such incident without mentioning its details, otherwise, such narratives may be studied for academic purposes or supplementary purposes, but they are not essential in understanding the Quran. The questions raised by you in the main post are answered in Al-Bayan from Quran’s internal context and established history. There was no need to refer to any historical book to understand those verses. For academic or supplementary purposes, sure one can refer to any tafseer book like Tafsir-e-Tabri or its summarized form in Tafsir ibn-e-kathir.

I found something that might be useful for anyone who might have similar question in future. Found this book called Maariful Quran: https://archive.org/details/MaarifulQuranEnglsih8Volumes/page/n1571/mode/2up

It explains in detail the context and background of revelation. The mentioned verse 5:41 and its context is explained in detail in 15 pages on pages 1574 to 1588 explaining who the jew tribes were, what kind of decisions they were coming to Prophet for, why Allah is telling Prophet to judge or not judge and so on.
