Talking To Non Mahrams On Chat
Assalamu Alaikum, In Sahih Muslim 1341, it is said a man can not be in the presence of a woman without a mahram being present with her. Ghamidi said that talking to non mahrams is allowed as long as we follow the rules that have been established. Does this mean messaging a man in a chat alone or calling him alone is not permissible? JazakAllahu Khairan

Chatting involves a kind of seclution. Thefore one should avoid anything immoral.

@Irfan76 should it be avoided with the same strictness as in person secluded meetings with na mahram or it can be ignored in some cases if care is taken not to be inappropriate. My husband and I talked on messages when we were engaged for a short period. We were still quite formal and mostly strangers. Should that have that been avoided completely? Moreover sometimes we have to talk to family members on phone or message for some work or family thing ( ex: I had to message my brother in law often inquiring the health of nephew who grew very seriously ill). Can that be excused if caution is exercised ?

Make it a group chat and include at least one more person in the chat.

I think, thats great advice for mixed friend groups!, but won’t work when there is something serious that needs to be discussed. Like the one with my bother in law, very serious life saving decisions had to made about an urgent situation regarding a 3 y/o without panicking everyone else and unfortunately he was the only male of the family currently in the city and I, the only medical professional. I guess I just want to know if it should treated with the same seriousness as physical seclusion.

When required, it is not unethical to talk on the phone or message. The point is, one should be modest.
