Is There Sin In Listening To Gossip
Assalamu Alaikum, according to 4:140 in Quran, can we not sit with those who sin like gossiping, etc? In this generation, so many sins are public and we often find this normalized among the people that are close to us so avoiding this is difficult. When someone gossips, I simply try to change the topic or just laugh it off and ignore it. I do listen, is that a sin? JazakAllahu Khairan.

However, it is true that we Muslims have been asked to stay away from excessive speculations, from spying on others and from Backbiting in Quran 49:12.

All of this starts from a gossip. Gossip could lead to sinful speculations, to spying and to backbiting etc. So dismissing it right from the beginning is the correct approach in this regard.
