Classification Of Homosexual Acts As Major Sins In Islam
Posted by Mohammed Zubair Alam on September 13, 2025 at 3:01 amAs-salamu alaikum,
I just want to clarify a view:
If I am not wrong, unlike heterosexual sexual acts where there is a distinction between major and minor sins, in homosexual acts there is no such distinction.
All homosexual activities — from just touching to any sexual act — are explicitly haram and considered major sins, right? The same applies to bestiality and other perverted sexual activities.
They directly fall in the category of “fawaish”.

Classification Of Homosexual Acts As Major Sins In Islam

1)Here, the actual act of illicit sex, meaning vaginal intercourse, is only possible in a heterosexual relationship, which is considered the major sin in this regard. And since this attraction is natural, perhaps God made the other forms of it minor sins.
2)In the case of same-sex acts, how would this logic apply? Firstly, it is considered unnatural. Secondly, there is no room for vaginal intercourse, so there is no “end” of it in that sense. Thirdly, the word “fawahish” includes the whole nature of homosexual acts.
3)As far as I know, the word “fawahish” includes adultery, homosexual acts, bestiality, incest, and all forms of sexual deviation. And in my understanding, all of them are major sins.
So, if illicit intercourse is what makes something a major sin, then should the same not apply in the case of bestiality or other such acts? I mean, those are considered even more disgusting.
4)If you say anal intercourse is the major sin for them, then again that applies only between males. So what about females?
I really think every act of it is a major sin, otherwise even bestiality or incest would also end up having “minor” levels of sin.

Member June 13, 2026 at 5:56 amOkay but
1) Doesn’t the word fawahish include homosexuality, bestiality, incest, and other forms of unnatural sex as a whole category, while in heterosexual matters it refers specifically to zina and not its lesser forms?
As we know, those lesser acts are prohibited in order to prevent one from reaching the actual form of fahishah or zina.
I also think they are termed minor because they are natural inclinations, and therefore God has provided mercy in this regard as a form of warning.
2)How do we define explicit sex between females?
3) Thirdly, if we treat all actions related to other forms of unnatural sex as minor sins except for explicit sexual intercourse, wouldn’t that sound problematic?
For example, sexual activities involving the same gender, animals, or incestuous relations.
Wouldn’t it be problematic to treat those acts as only minor sins when they can pose such a great threat to the family or society, even when no intercourse is involved?
