  • Status Of Earnings From A Degree Attained Via Unethical Means

One of my friends got admission to university in disable quote and this quote has less merit as compare to open seats merit,so with the low merit/numbers he got admission. He got his degree by studying and fulfilling the degree program requirements, but he had some difficulties getting his disability certificate, so he used reference in the process to get that certificate (did not give any money), but now he thinks that he might not had that level of disability which was required to get a disability certificate (if so, then it is illegal to make and use such certificate to get admission). He also had these doubts during his degree, that either his degree or earnigs will be Halal, but he continued and completed his graduation. Now, he is worried about his degree that he got admitted into by using that certificate, is this degree halal? Is it halal to get a job/start a business using this degree and will his earnings be halal?

Because according to the law if someone gets admission by wrong means or by providing wrong information it’s degree is not valid (ethically), even he works hard (study) to get the degree. Now, he thinks that the only way of his repentance (tauba) is that Allah wants him to quit his profession based on this degree, because he thinks all his life time earnings will be haram if he continues working based on this degree. Is his thinking right and what should he do now?

If one gets a job based on fake degree or through deception, then later during that job If one has developed enough competency for the job then income earned from that Job would be Halal. However, one will be held accountable for the initial act of deception done to get the job or fake degree in the first place. One should try to repent to God for this mistake and should try to make good for that deception through whatever means available.

My question is even if he developed competency for that job and it’s possible that he quit his profession based on that degree and opt a new profession where his that degree is not relevant so should he do this?

Is it preferred that he should do so or it is a extremist approach?

It’s certainly a difficult path given how the world works, but if he pursues it with the intention of clearing the blemishes of his past, then it’s a commendable choice (not an obligatory one though).
