Abu Sa’id al-Khudri said that when God’s messenger went out to the place of prayer on the day of sacrifice, or on the day when the fast was broken, he came upon some women and said, “Give alms, you women folk, for I have been shown that you will be the majority of the inhabitants of hell.” They asked, “For what reason, messenger of God?” He replied, “You are greatly given to abuse, and you are ungrateful to your husbands. Among women who are deficient in intelligence and religion I have not seen anyone more able to remove the understanding of a prudent man than one of you.” They asked, “What is the deficiency of our religion and our intelligence, messenger of God?” He replied, “Is not the testimony of a woman equivalent to half the testimony of a man?” They said, “Yes.” Remarking that that pertained to the deficiency of her intelligence, he asked, “Is it not the case that when she menstruates she neither prays nor fasts?” When they replied, “Yes,” he said, “That pertains to the deficiency of her religion.”

Assalam o Alaikum. I have seen the videos regarding the explanation of the Hadees however I still can’t understand the meaning of naqis properly, in the Surah Tawbah ayah aswell. I guess it is because I have always seen it translated as deficiency, even according to Arabic sites , the implication i see favoured is that it means deficiency in religion. Why hasn’t someone tried translating it as concession in religion and intelligence. I also feel confused about what the word “aqal” means as it is translated as intelligence, but if that is true, then deficiency in intelligence makes more sense than concession in intelligence. I would really like to understand these words from someone with knowledge of Arabic .

Whatever the meaning one takes, one should know that this is a human expression on an occasion, not a religious statement or knowledge of Deen. Not all the sayings of the prophet were religious in nature.

Women held less responsibility in worldly affairs; this is about the state of women in that particular civilization, where women were not involved in the social and legal matters. Their lesser share in prayers due to menstruation is also a fact. Despite their less experience and fewer responsibilities, they can influence more experienced men.

I understand Sir. Should women try to pray more nafl to make up for it ? What if her period starts after zuhr but she hasn’t prayed, can she pray zuhr after getting pure from menses to avail that prayer or is that disrespectful to the exemption given by Allah Talla.

She is not required to pray that prayer; however, if she says it, it is ok.
