I grew up listening to a Hadith saying that u will be forced to pick up the salt with your lashes that u didn’t eat. Scary stuff if there is truth to it. I have a kid I have started weaning, and i have read it is healthy for her to play with food, experiment, learn to chew and so forth while trying to eat so I don’t like to police her movements too much . This results in food being thrown around sometimes, and if it doesn’t elicit too much disgust, I try to eat it as she is my child but i can find it very anxiety inducing as it can be pretty disgusting. I don’t enjoy eating little meat crumbs or chewed vegetables or things that have been in her mouth. Is it responsibility to eat what she leaves or throws even if i don’t like it and can actually disgust me.

I am not certain about the authenticity of this hadith. Nevertheless, even if such a statement has indeed been correctly attributed to the Prophet (sws), it would pertain to the intentional wastage of food—for which one would be held accountable. This does not apply to genuine situations, such as the one you mentioned, where the upbringing of a child naturally involves minor and unavoidable wastages. In such cases, food that cannot be consumed in a hygienic manner may be disposed of. What must be avoided, however, is deliberate and excessive wastage of food.
