Praying While Sitting In The Public Place
Is it permissible to pray while sitting if we have difficulty finding a place to pray while standing?
Yesterday I saw a viral video about Muslim students praying in the school parking lot. It was early in the morning and there were no people around, so it should have been okay. However, the people around them looked at them with disdain, as if to say, “Isn’t there any other place besides here? This is a public place and you are disturbing people who want to park here.”
It eventually led to a confrontation, and the internet is still buzzing about it. From this case, I have a question: if I’m not sick but the location doesn’t allow for standing prayer (whether it’s because it would attract attention or disturb the locals), is it permissible to pray while sitting, like on a park bench or another place that can be used as a seat and doesn’t disturb others?
Because I once saw a sheikh say that if you’re not sick, you’re obligated to stand, and if you’re not sick, your prayer isn’t valid if you pray while sitting. Is that correct, sir?
