  • Inheritance/Gifted Property From Father’s Mixed Haram Earnings

Posted by Engr. Muhammad Umer Farooq on December 18, 2025 at 2:17 am

I am writing to seek your guidance regarding a complicated issue involving my father’s earnings and the assets he has given me. I am am deeply concerned about the Halal status of my property and future inheritance.

My father has been a government employee for over 25 years. Based on my estimation, almost 70% of his entire earnings during this period have been from Haram or doubtful sources.

I’d been gifted property by father in 2015 which’s worth millions now and When my father passes away, I will be in line to inherit his remaining bank balance, retirement funds, and his property. Again, I estimate that 70% of this wealth was generated through bribery, corruption etc.

I have done some preliminary research through Chat Gpt and found rulings suggesting that if wealth is Haram due to the method of earning (Haram li-kasbihi), the sin lies on the earner, but it may be lawful for the recipient who receives it through a valid contract (like a gift or inheritance). I would like to know if these rulings apply to my specific case involving the stolen machine and corruption.

Reference 1: The Opinion of Ibn Masud (RA)

In Musannaf Abd al-Razzaq, it is reported that Abdullah ibn Masud was asked about accepting food or invitations from a person who consumes Riba (interest). He replied: “For you is the wholesome benefit (al-mahna’), and upon him is the sin (al-wizar).”

Reference 2: The Opinion of Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen (RH)

In Liqa’ al-Bab al-Maftuh (Meeting 185), Shaykh Ibn Uthaymeen stated regarding inheritance from a person with Haram earnings: “The sin is upon the one who engaged in [the haram earning]… and there is nothing upon the one who inherits it… because this wealth transferred to the heir through a legislative (Shar’i) method, which is inheritance.”

    My Question:

Based on the severity of my father’s actions, is the house he gifted me in 2015 Halal for me to keep, or must I sell it and give the money to charity?

Am I permitted to inherit his wealth in the future, knowing that a majority of it came from these sources?

Do the citations provided above apply to my situation?
