    Assalamualaikum

Could you explain the meaning of this hadith:

    Sunan Ibn Majah 2291

It was narrated from Jabir bin ‘Abdullah that a man said:

“O Messenger of Allah, I have wealth and a son, and my father wants to take all my wealth.” He said: “You and your wealth belong to your father.”

The narration of hadith often omits the broader context and specific circumstances of the incidents it reports. For this reason, hadith cannot be treated as an independent source of knowledge; rather, they must be evaluated in light of the Qur’an and the established Sunnah.

From a legal perspective, a father has no inherent right to his son’s property. In the case in question, the Prophet ﷺ would have been aware of the circumstances between the father and the son. The son was likely indebted to his father, and the Prophet resolved their dispute accordingly, as reflected in the narration.
