They already believed in God, the Creator, the Administrator of the affairs. The problem was polytheism. They assume that God has appointed many small gods. They were told that their assumptions about many gods are not proven. Intellect does not confirm it; there is no statement from God in its support. Therefore, they should give up their false tradition of multiple gods. There is only God whom they believe in too.
