Zakat Obligation & Taxes Paid In A Non-Muslim Majority Country
Question 1 (Income Tax as Zakat Deduction):
“Assalamu Alaikum. I live in India, which is a non-Islamic country. My annual CTC is 30 lakhs and approximately Rs. 24,000 is deducted every month as income tax (around Rs. 2,88,000 per year). Since India’s tax system is not based on Islamic principles and this tax is compulsory — I have no choice but to pay it — can this tax amount be deducted from my zakatable wealth? Or are tax and zakat two completely separate obligations where paying tax does not reduce or exempt any portion of zakat? Please guide in the light of Quran and Sunnah.”
Question 2 (Savings and Jewellery for Daughters’ Marriage):
“My second question is regarding savings and gold jewellery that I have specifically set aside for my 4 daughters’ marriages. This amount and jewellery is not for my personal use — it is exclusively earmarked for their future weddings. Until I actually give it to my daughters, it remains in my possession and ownership. Is this wealth exempt from zakat since it is dedicated for a specific future purpose? Or does it remain zakatable as long as it is still under my ownership and has not been transferred to them? Please guide according to Ghamidi sahab’s principles on zakat.”
